First, before we get down to business, a little quiz.
Which is the oldest form of digital communications?

A. Teletype (RTTY)
B.  Packet
C.  Morse Code (CW)
D.  Amtor
E.  drums

If you said E. you are correct.  Drums have been used for communications by Native Americans, Africans, and Asians for thousands of years.  Next is Morse Code, then teletype.

Today's digital modes are far more complex than drums, CW, or even teletype.  To help you understand these modes better we have posted here a couple of files in PDF format.  They require Acrobate reader.  If you don't have Acrobate reader you can get it free (This will take you out of the MARS web site)

Note:  These files will take a few moments to download, depending on the speed or your internet connection.  The first and third are relatively small, but the second is over a MB and may take a little more time, depending on your internet connection speed.  Those with DSL, it should not take more than a minute or so.  I think you will find the files worth it.  Dave has put together some nice graphics and flow charts, and he explains things in a clear, easy to follow way.
