Changes and Updates
When a new version of MARS training material is released the old version should be destroyed.  This office (NNN0ASN) will attempt to notify all Area Directors and Area FOURs by message and/or e-mail of those changes. The info should be passed by them to all other training staff and directors.  The notice should contain the course title, new version number,  and/or the version or portions of a version it replaces.  If a totally different course is superseding an existing course the notification will contain the new and old course titles and be given widest possible dissemination.

Unless otherwise directed, a member who is currently taking an existing course or version will have 90 days from date of release of the new course to complete the existing course and receive credit for it.

Optionally, the member may choose to take the new course and discontinue the existing one.  If a member chooses this option they must notify their state director and state FOUR immediately.  In such a case a member may take participation credit for the time actually spent on the old course.  The member need not complete a test or receive a grade to submit this time so long as he or she has notified their state director in advance.

Not all courses have a completion time line, but some do.  Any request for extension of time to complete a course must clearly state legitimate reason for the extension, must be endorsed by the member's state director, and approved by the area director, or area FOUR at the director's discretion.

 Members on Leave of Absence
A member on LOA is not automatically granted an extension for any correspondence course work that may become due during the LOA (except Tango members, see below).  Course work extensions must be requested and approved separately.  Who must approve the extension depends upon the course.  Most courses can be approved for extension by the state director.  Area and state FOURs need to be notified of the request if it is approved.  The request must clearly state that the member is or will be on LOA, include the start and end dates of the LOA.  Normally, an extension based on an LOA should be granted for the amount of time the member is on LOA plus reasonable time to complete the course work; e.g. member is granted a 60 day LOA.  He requests an extension on a course that is due in 30 days.  The course extension, if granted, should be for 30 days after the expiration of the LOA.

LOA for Tango Members
It is rare that a Trial Service member is granted an LOA or extension of training time, but it does happen from time to time  for very good cause.  For purposes of the MOC course only if an LOA is granted to a Tango member the MOC course is automatically granted an extension for the same amount of time without any other action required.  All other training requirements for Tangos, including locally developed training, is automatically extended.  Timing resumes upon the end of the LOA.

An extension of a Tango member's Trial Service Period is not the same as an LOA.  An extension simple grants a longer period to complete the training requirements.  The Tango member is still required to meet all participation requirements.

All Other Courses
Third party courses, such as FEMA courses, are subject to the rules of the third party.
