Alabama Traffic Rep Guide

The Alabama Net Operations Guide defines the duties of the Traffic Rep in Section D as follows;

D-2. Traffic Rep Duties and Responsibilities:

a. Pick up and deliver Alabama area traffic from/to the WL2K system.

b. Take Out of Region and priority and above Out of State precedence traffic from state nets to the WL2K system as soon as possible.

c. Check-in on state nets which meet during the period of duty.

d. The period of duty of the Traffic Rep shall be from the beginning of the 4A1B net on the day of duty until the end of the 4A1B net following the day of duty. NCS will direct outgoing traffic from the 4A1B net to the oncoming Traffic Rep.

Some General Notes:

1.      Traffic reps must be familiar and comply with NTP 8, CHAPTER 8; DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS PROCEDURES, including;

·        The Traffic Rep is responsible for correct MESSAGE and WL2K addressing.

·        If the originator does hot have correct addressing, it is the Traffic Rep’s duty to fix.

·        Traffic Reps must insure that the MARS message is entirely upper case and lines must not exceed 69 characters.

·        To preserve message accuracy, only the capital letters A through Z, the numerals 0 through 9, question mark, colon, dash, slant, paren, unparen, comma, apostrophe and period may be used in messages entered into the MDS. If other punctuation marks are needed, they may be sent in abbreviated form.  The tab key should never be used in MARS messages.  Create column separation with the space bar rather than the tab key.

2.      The subject line of the WL2K ‘email’ must always begin with [ //MARS p/ ] wherepis the   precedence of the MARS message.

3.      The complete MARS-formatted message is placed in the body/text portion of the WL2K ‘email’.

4.      For Airmail, separate instances should be established.  One instance for your personal MARS Callsign and one for the Alabama State Address (NNN4AA).

5.      All outgoing traffic must be sent using your personal MARS address.  Incoming traffic is picked up using the Alabama State address.

6.      The NNN4AA address must never be used except while you have the Traffic Rep duty.

Getting Started:

There are two methods of accessing the WL2K system; PACTOR (AIRMAIL) and WINMOR (RMS EXPRESS).  Choose the method best suited to your station.  Information on setting up for each method can be found at http://www.navymars.org/central/reg4/al/MARS_wl2k.htm.

The Winlink Website is a primary source of WL2K information, documents and software.  Just go http://www.winlink.org/,  click Site Login and then Create new account using your MARS callsign.
